A spa day is most people’s idea of the ultimate in relaxation. Whether you love to have a facial, spend some time in the sauna or steam room or just like a deep relaxing massage, it’s a chance to kick back, chill out and leave the stresses of the work-a-day world behind you. So what should you look for in your ultimate spa experience?

1. The services on offer. This really goes without saying but you want to pick a spa that offers a good range of services that you want to use. If you are into sporting activities make sure it has a pool or gym facility, you can always relax after a good workout, or if beauty is more your thing try and get a spa that offers facials, massage, hot stone treatment and the like. Some spas offer specialist services such as mud baths and mineral springs, depending on their location, so its always worth checking these out if you get the chance.

2. The ambiance. Does the spa feel relaxing, or its it sandwiched between the motorway and an industrial estate? Are the rooms light and airy, or do you prefer a more comfortable and cosy feel? Are children allowed, or even pets? The ambiance of a spa will be a major factor to your relaxation. Don’t be afraid to pop in and ask to see the facilities before handing over your money.

3. Do you prefer your spa on top of a mountain next to a fresh glacier, or are you more at home in the heart of the city? Remember that high city rents may mean that some facilities are unavailable, or are very expensive, whereas more remote spa destinations take longer to get to and can sometimes be inaccessible during bad weather.

4. Watch the price. For some people this wont be an issue but for most of us a spa break is still something of a luxury. Make sure that you know which treatments are included in the price and which ones are extra. For example, may beauty therapies such as facials and even massage session can often cost a lot more than you expect leaving you with a very stressful bill to pay! That kind of defeats the purpose in visiting the spa in the first place.

5. Finally, what is the reputation of the spa? Do your homework, and search the internet for review sites. Ask people you know, or even local in the area if the resort has a good, bad, or indifferent reputation. After all, if you are paying your hard earned cash on such a luxury break, you want it to be the best experience possible.

Spa breaks are a luxury that some of us simply can’t do without but just because a spa is expensive doesn’t mean that its good. Use these five tips to sort out the good from the bad and make sure that you are relaxed and ready to take on life rather than disappointed and frustrated when you return from your well earned break.
